CAREER ENCOUNTERS: Men in
Nursing More about this program
This documentary style program was developed in
collaboration with the American Assembly for Men in
Nursing, Shot on location in Ohio, California, Pennsylvania
and Washington DC, the program features ten registered
nurses including a flight nurse, a nursing student working
in a big city ER, a nurse anesthetist and a US Army nurse.
These men share their experiences entering a traditionally
female profession, explain why they chose nursing and talk
about the challenges and rewards of their jobs.

You will not see pharmacists counting pills behind a
counter because the emphasis of this program is on the
emerging model of pharmacist as integral member of the
direct patient care team .We visit a community pharmacist
in Seattle who is breaking ground in the establishment of a
new model of pharmacy professional practice, we meet a
pharmacist working in a pharmaceutical research center in
Connecticut, a pharmacy care educator working for a chain
drug store in Pennsylvania, a clinical pharmacist making
rounds with the medical staff in a St. Louis hospital, a
large hospital director of pharmacy who manages a staff of
60 pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, pharmacists
specializing in managed care as well as student interning
with a physician in a medical practice as part of her
training in a Doctor of Pharmacy program.

Science Association, this program features 10 interviews
and lively footage of real people who have studied
political science and who can articulate how their
political science backgrounds have been critical to their
vocations, their avocations and their general public lives.
The featured careers include law, business, journalism,
NGO's, social services, interest groups, college faculty,
high school teaching and appointed and elected office. One
highlight of the program is an interview with Donna
Shalala, Secretary of the Department of Health and human
Services in the Clinton Administration.

program
This program was produced after the dramatic decline in the
"dot-com" boom of the 90's. It explores how careers in
information technology are changing and how students can
prepare for IT careers in the rapidly evolving information
age. We meet fascinating people studying and working in a
broad range of IT applications and we learn that future
careers in information technology will require multiple
skills. People entering this field will need to know the
technology but even more important, they need to know about
education and fields like biology, chemistry, business
entertainment or Health care. And they must be skilled in
in teamwork, communication and the ability to constantly
learn new things.
CAREER ENCOUNTERS: Radiologic
Technologist
In this Career Encounter, we meet students from across the
U.S. who have chosen Radiologic Technology for their life's
work. Radiologic Technologists are the health care
professionals who perform diagnostic imaging examinations
and deliver radiation therapy treatments. You'll find them
working in emergency rooms, surgical suites, prenatal
clinics, and in outpatient service centers. Their specialty
areas include, Radiography, Sonography, Nuclear Medicine
and Radiation Therapy. These are all high-tech, high demand
Health care careers, but we learn from these students that
their most important skill is the ability to communicate
with patients and other Health care professionals.

Architecture

The program shows how architects must be proficient in many
areas including team work and communication. Architects are
featured in a wide range of challenging settings and
include developers, corporate architects, self employed

The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine plays a vital role in
providing health care for the world's animal and human
populations. Featured are ten veterinarians in locations
around the country, from Sea World of Florida to Fossil Rim
Wildlife Center in Texas, to an ophthalmology practice in
Atlanta, and a swine farm in Nebraska.
CAREER ENCOUNTERS: Women In
Computing
The world of computing is exploding with opportunities,
especially for women. This program presents accomplished
female computer scientists and specialists working in the
fields of Computing, Finance, Health care, Academia and
Publishing. The program emphasizes the need for more women
to take part in shaping the technology that will define the
next millennium.

Sigma Theta Tau Media Award
Viewers see what has changed within the nursing profession
since the days of Florence Nightingale, and what has
remained the same. The program spotlights the wide ranging
opportunities within nursing available today including
critical care, emergency, psychiatric, home health,
pediatrics and nursing administration.

Engineering

The women in this program discuss what attracted them to
engineering and introduce the wide range of specialty areas
in the field today. Viewers learn of the various avenues of

Advanced Practice Nurses are registered nurses whose

health care services. Featured are Nurse Practitioners,

CAREER ENCOUNTERS: Optics
& Photonics
This field deals with the study and use of light as energy
and information. It includes lasers, CD technology, fiber
optics and lenses and it presents unlimited opportunities
for careers in research and product design in fields as
diverse as heath care and entertainment. Featured are
technicians with community college associates degrees as
well as scientists with advanced degrees.
CAREER ENCOUNTERS: Automotive
Technician
Todays cars and trucks are complex, computerized machines
which require better educated technicians to keep then on
the road. This program features well paying opportunities
for automobile repair, truck repair and collision repair
and refinish technicians. Emphasis is on the training,
retraining and certification needed and where to get it.
CAREER ENCOUNTERS: Alternative
Fuel Technician
By the year 2000, there will be millions of vehicles
running on fuels other than gasoline. The changes are
mandated by our need to become less dependent on foreign
oil and by the need for cleaner air. As more vehicles use
these alternative fuels, we will need many more qualified
technicians to take care of them . This program introduces
some of the experienced qualified technicians working at
dealerships, airports and fleet operations who find this
work both interesting and important to our future.

Specialist
Approx. 15 min.
With over 200 million cars and trucks in the US and each
vehicle comprised of thousands of parts, the automotive and
truck parts specialist is becoming an increasingly
important part of the automotive industry. Currently there
is are great employment opportunities in this field at car
and truck dealerships as well as the thousands of parts
distributors throughout the country.
CAREER ENCOUNTERS: Podiatric
Medicine
A Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (D.P.M.) specializes in the
prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and
disorders affecting the human foot. They make independent
judgments, administer treatments, prescribe medications and
also perform surgery. The aging population and the
increased participation in sports, make podiatric medicine
a growing and challenging health profession.

Telly Award Finalist
This program will be of interest not only to high school
and college students, but also to adult career-changers and
to people already in education who want to enhance their
careers. The program focuses on teachers involved with
innovative education programs in four states that exemplify
current trends.

Careers in radiologic technologies offer good starting
salaries and excellent benefits, and, in some cases require
no more than a high school degree for entry into training
programs. Viewers meet technologists in radiography,
sonography, nuclear medicine and radiation therapy while
learning what these specialists do as they see them in
action.
CAREER ENCOUNTERS: Mechanical
Engineering
Viewers will meet male and female mechanical engineers who
are involved in the design of a wide range of complex
systems from computer hardware to manufacturing processes.
The program includes an interview with NASA astronaut and
mechanical engineer, Jan Davis who explains her exciting
contribution to space exploration.
